Improving projects has been one of the big headlines in 2021 for Feats. The new design features a bigger and better media slider to really highlight the visuals of projects, while not forgetting important information such as brand, description, contributors and roles which make Feats unique.
The redesign includes:
- A completely new design (duh)
- A new and improved slider
- Much better full-screen mode and video viewing experience
- Visible, clickable tags
- Related projects from the brand
- Easier sharing options
- A very cool mobile experience!
The project pages in Feats were very practical, excelling at one thing in particular: *relaying information.* However, we knew the pages weren't reaching their full potential in terms of *presenting and experiencing* projects. The thousands of great projects – representing the hard work and precious time of our members – deserved better.
We started by getting an overview of "projects" as a whole by creating an Opportunity Solution Tree to map out all the possibilities. We decided to focus on "improving the viewing and presenting of a single project" (which was but one opportunity out of many.) This was to make sure we didn't get "tunnel vision" in focusing too much just on the "design" part of the update. A design is much more than visuals alone.
Our community team provided insights into the issues they'd heard from members or experienced themselves. Our developers expressed a wish to replace the old slider with something new and better which was easier to work with. We set up mini-surveys on the website to hear from anyone visiting the current project page. Since we were also running some interviews about Feats with members, if there was time, we asked them about it. Finally, the leadership team discussed our options and agreed on the scope for a "Projects Page 1.5" which would tick many boxes without being too much of a mouthful.
Three different versions for a desktop design and one for mobile were crafted, a survey with links to the prototypes was sent out to our member feedback group 'Feats Club' and through our testing tool 'Maze'. Armed with feedback from members, friends and strangers, we decided on a final design (adding a few, last-minute tweaks), and finally implemented it. As a huge bonus, the project became the first to lay the foundations for our new Design System using 'Chakra UI', currently being gradually developed and implemented.
You're looking at it right now! Pretty cool, right?
This was an altogether great project and a fantastic team effort by the Feats team and beyond! 🚀
