DTU Skylab Wayfinding
If DTU Skylab is the epitome of entrepreneurship at DTU, that would make the much-anticipated new DTU Skylab building the inner sanctum of all things experimental. So, when asked to design a wayfinding concept for DTU Skylab, we came to play! In continuation of our work with the over-all identity for DTU, we developed a site-specific strategy and a graphic element with the power to grab the attention of the visitors and take them on a journey. User-friendly map DTU Skylab is actually a combination of the previous home and a new addition – making the building in its entirety somewhat complex. Through environmental graphics the complexity was reduced to a more user-friendly form that offers a sense of arrival as well as guidance in the shape of a map. Introducing the swirl It’s vibrant and it’s brazen - and you can’t help but notice the orange, swirly line as it bends, climbs, and brings together the entire building. It serves not so much as a straight-forward navigational system but as a not so gentle reminder that true innovation requires limitless imagination and the ability to defy the laws of gravity if need be. Instead of the typical plaque that gives thanks to generous donors, we went one further and stencilled the donors into the permanent décor of the building. Gradient Even the meeting rooms pay tribute to limitless innovation by using a fading gradient glass foil – in orange, naturally. Process The exact placement of the orange swirl is in itself a bit of an architectural experimentation. It’s one thing to design it, but quite another to make it happen! Thanks to the expertise of our partners in signage, Nielsen & Kromann, the swirl swirled beautifully. Long before the building was ready, the promise of a bright and limitless new tomorrow was clear and present all over the building site. The bright Skylab identity and the promise of playful innovation have eagerly overtaken every single communication platform.
