With only 10% of the UK population saving enough for retirement and the state pension fund set to deplete by 2033, pension providers face a tough challenge in engaging apathetic or intimidated customers. Scottish Widows tackled this by developing Pension Mirror, a mobile-first tool designed for users with no pension knowledge. Using AI to estimate the user’s age from a selfie, the tool compares their savings to the national average for their age group, drawing on ONS data. The result was a 193% increase in app registrations and over a quarter-million interactions. The tool was so successful that Scottish Widows promoted it to non-customers and even launched a version for International Women’s Day to address the gender pension gap. By appealing to vanity and competitiveness, Pension Mirror effectively boosted app downloads and sparked conversations about pensions.
