The Workshop of Skovgaard
Three interactive installations at The Skovgaard Museum tell the story of Joakim Skovgaard’s comprehensive fresco decoration of Viborg Cathedral. The Skovgaard Museum in Viborg is dedicated to the artistic heritage of the Skovgaard family displaying works by four generations of the family. “The Workshop of Skovgaard” is centered around the decoration of Viborg Cathedral made by Joakim Skovgaard, which was the starting point of the Skovgaard Museum. In three interactive installations visitors can learn about the fresco process, follow the work process behind the comprehensive church decoration as well as study Skovgaard’s impressive life’s work. The installation “The Process of Fresco Painting” is a digital fresco installation conveying the craftsmanship behind the decoration. With an ordinary brush the visitor can “paint” a digital fresco directly on the wall of the museum and thus experience what it means to paint with the fresco technique. At Joakim Skovgaard's old work desk, visitors can immerse themselves in the great work process that preceded the decoration of the Cathedral. By placing one of the nine sketchbooks on the work desk the content of the book unfolds in front of the visitor. Each sketchbook contains a large amount of digital material about a selected subject from the decoration. Here visitors can read about the subject, study sketches and cartons used in the process. The third installation is a large map of Denmark anno 1900 with a selection of the cities where Skovgaard has made his mark giving visitors an insight into the great oeuvre of Joakim Skovgaard. The map is connected to an interactive screen displaying a series of postcards with personal greetings from Skovgaard. Each postcard unfolds descriptions, photographs and references the specific artwork or decoration. https://www.yoke.dk/
