Giving A Voice To The Unheard
Islam Alijaj, a candidate in Switzerland's 2023 elections, aimed to address the severe underrepresentation of people with disabilities in Parliament. Despite significant challenges—he was born with cerebral palsy, uses a wheelchair, and has a speech impediment—Islam was determined to change perceptions and advocate for inclusivity. Despite starting with minimal party support and name recognition, Islam's campaign resonated widely. He secured over 95,000 votes in Zurich, a testament to the support he garnered from voters who believed in his mission to represent the disabled community. Islam's election marks a significant milestone, making him a voice for the 1.8 million people with disabilities in Switzerland, advocating for their rights and representation in Parliament.
