The Young and Alone campaign, a collaboration between OTIS, Yfoundations, and Ogilvy/Hogarth, confronts Australia’s youth homelessness crisis through a faux reality TV show trailer, spotlighting the struggles of homeless youth who make up 40% of the country’s homeless population. OTIS crafted an emotionally charged and authentic soundscape that balances the drama of reality TV with the rawness of homelessness, using visceral, jarring sounds—like passing trains and door slams—to reflect the unpredictability and isolation these young people face. Employing unconventional audio techniques to maintain realism, the campaign’s multi-format approach runs across TV, cinema, radio, and social media, with sound design that parallels the visuals by emphasizing loneliness and tension without sensationalism, immersing audiences in the harsh realities of youth homelessness.
