Schools for Equality
Challenge Polish women suffer inequality because of imposed stereotypical role models. Polish children are taught that men are destined to perform great deeds. More than 17,000 schools in Poland are named after outstanding historical figures – patrons. Patrons influence the school curriculum and are presented as role models for young people. However, men are patrons of 90% of Polish schools. They are presented as role models for young people and praised during annual celebrations. Additionally, their achievements are reflected in school curricula. BNP Paribas wanted to challenged the Polish education system by encouraging schools to choose women as their patronesses. Idea On International Women's Day 2021, together with BNP Paribas, we launched a financial benefits program supporting schools, with only one condition: The school must choose a woman as its patroness. The integrated campaign drew attention to shocking inequalities, highlighted women's achievements, and encouraged schools to join the change. Further, BNP Paribas launched a program to support schools with financial assistanceto promote new patronesses among students. Lack of equality among patrons is one of the causes and results of women's decreasing role in Polish society. The school campaign and support program brought an instant shift in awareness of gender inequality and has already resulted in significant changes. Results BNP Paribas launched a campaign to challenge what has been a taboo subject in Poland for decades. Previously, no brand had talked about the source of inequality imposed in the standard education system that influences hundreds of thousands of children every year. Despite the pandemic, closed educational facilities, and strong opposition from conservative politicians, including the Minister of Education and Chief Educational Officer, the campaign resulted in more than 20 schools choosing women as their patronesses. Now, every year, thousands of young people will learn about equality and the freedom to choose role models.
