Teaching Bags
Recycling in Colombia is a growing problem. As of 2021, 78% of households did not know how to recycle properly, and Bogotá, Colombia's capital, had no organized disposal system for its 8 million inhabitants. To make matters worse, the government established a law for retailers to deliver fact orders on their online platforms in plastic bags. In the midst of this uproar, a national recycling law was introduced that made the use of the three-color plastic bag system mandatory, leading to more plastic waste in a society that is not very educated in the recycling process. As one of the largest retailers in Colombia, Metro also took part as one of the largest producers of plastic bags, because of their mandatory use due to national laws. So, to address one of its biggest challenges, helping the environment, while still using plastic bags for e-commerce deliveries, it introduced a design solution: by changing the colors of its regular plastic bags to those established by the recycling law (green for organic products, black for disposables and white for reusables and recycling), the daily use of the plastic bag changed so that it ceased to be just another waste product, and became useful for Colombian households.
