AI With Soul
CHATJuneteenth, created by BarkleyOKRP’s Black ERG The Hub and its Black-owned subsidiary Putney, is an AI chatbot designed to educate non-Black individuals about Juneteenth—a holiday marking the end of slavery in the U.S., celebrated by Black Americans for over 150 years and made a federal holiday in 2021. Responding to the burden often placed on Black Americans to explain the holiday, the chatbot offers accessible, informative answers in its own voice, built with input from nearly 20 Black employees across departments. The project aims to shift the responsibility of education, allowing Black communities to celebrate freely while encouraging others to take ownership of learning Black history, which is American history. The campaign also features supplemental resources like books, articles, films, and a short film to promote the chatbot. As Putney founder Elena Robinson noted, “We needed to find a way around it, and CHATJuneteenth was born.”
