GEO magazine and agency BETC Fullsix have launched a groundbreaking editorial project using AI to recreate realistic images of five extinct animal species—koala lemur, dodo, Steller's sea cow, couagga, and thylacine—lost to human activity. Combining scientific rigor and creative innovation, the project involved leading biologists and palaeontologists to ensure accuracy. Using BETC’s proprietary AI tool Vermeer, the visuals offer a powerful reminder of the urgent need to protect biodiversity. Featured in a special GEO issue (Fascinante Faune Sauvage, out August 6), the project turns forgotten species into a striking act of remembrance and awareness.
