Mograph is Dead. Long Live Mograph
For the 9th HalfRez conference, themed "Mograph is Dead. Long Live Mograph," Flavor took an unexpected creative approach for the show intro—puppets! The HalfRez leadership team approached us early in the summer with the project, and we eagerly accepted. Given that HalfRez is all about sharing creative voices, we found inspiration in its speech-bubble-shaped logo. Associate Creative Director Brad Backofen had been experimenting with motion capture hand puppets in C4D, making it the perfect starting point for our story: a puppet finding its creative voice. We developed narratives centered around puppet characters, ultimately crafting a journey that played to our strengths in C4D and After Effects while pushing us into new creative territories. The second act of our short story became a mixed-media montage, blending AI-generated backgrounds, VR painting, cel animation, and even real puppetry. This fusion of techniques took our hero puppet on the trip of a lifetime—bringing HalfRez’s theme to life in a way that was both nostalgic and cutting-edge.
