Shaping a Secure and Sustainable Energy Future
The International Energy Agency (IEA) provides authoritative data and analysis on energy issues to our world’s leaders. Since its creation in 1974, the IEA has evolved and expanded significantly to examine the full spectrum of fuels and technologies in all countries. To reflect this reach and impact—and to be recognized as a global leader of the clean energy transition—the IEA needed to redesign its brand and implement a new digital-first strategy. AREA 17 partnered with the IEA on this digital transformation, which informed brand and digital strategy, visual identity, product design, and development. The IEA site is made with Twill, our open-source CMS for Laravel. Shaping our energy future The IEA is much more than a data repository; it sits at the heart of the global dialogue on energy, providing analysis and data, informing policy, and proposing real-world solutions. To modernize the perception of the IEA and reinforce its global reach and impact, we developed a brand platform with a vision of “Shaping a secure and sustainable energy future for all.” This was the basis for a bold new design system and product strategy, and a tool for aligning internal culture with a vision for the future. Open and accessible content We worked closely with the IEA to define a digital strategy that aligns the website with the agency’s mission, shifting focus from selling physical reports to providing open and accessible content. We designed a system of hubs—Global, Countries, Fuels and technologies—that present related data, analysis, and policies. In addition to improving discovery, hubs emphasize the agency’s holistic perspective across all fuels and all technologies and its global inclusiveness. Streamlined content publication Part of the new digital first strategy, we worked with the IEA to optimize its operational efficiencies and publish its analysis faster. Leveraging Twill, our open-source CMS, we built a custom made publishing experience, that empowers IEA editors to create rich and modular content pieces, short or long-form. By integrating with some of the IEA’s internal content and data APIs, such as its statistics API, we were also able to ensure users have access to the most recent information published by the IEA without delay, and alleviated IEA editors from manual entry tasks they had to do with the past website.
