The IPA launched the first episode of its new podcast series, Making Sense, featuring a wide-ranging conversation with Rory Sutherland, former IPA president and vice chairman of Ogilvy. In the episode, Rory argued that marketing and advertising have failed to explain, price, and promote the true value they create, limiting their relevance by selling execution rather than strategic thinking. He highlighted the long-term value of campaigns like Coca-Cola’s Share a Coke, advocated for closer integration between marketing and innovation, and warned that finance-driven short-term thinking and AI adoption risk suppressing creativity. Rory also emphasized the commercial power of non-conformity, urging businesses to “be more puppy” by acting in unexpected, creative ways. Hosted by IPA head of marketing and data innovation Simon Frazier, the series aims to make complex ideas in media and advertising understandable, relatable, and actionable, with episodes featuring insights from creativity, media, planning, technology, and behavioural science.
