Haenyeo Safe Buddy Stills
The Haenyeo Safe Buddy app is a striking example of modern technology reinforcing centuries‑old tradition. Developed to protect Jeju’s legendary women divers—haenyeo, recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage—the app builds on their cooperative safety culture, sunooreum, by using smartwatch data to monitor heart rates in real time. When danger signals are detected, alerts are sent within a 1km radius, enabling nearby divers to initiate rescue within the critical four‑to‑six‑minute window before emergency responders arrive. With additional features like an emergency button that notifies village associations and response centers, the system bridges the growing physical distance between divers as their numbers decline. Since its launch in March, 300 haenyeo have adopted the app, and no fatalities have been reported among monitored users—underscoring how innovation can preserve cultural heritage while safeguarding lives.
