Kunsthalle Basel, one of Switzerland’s oldest and most progressive contemporary art institutions, set out to redefine its identity for a new era. With a history rooted in experimentation, emerging artists, and a commitment to what’s next, the institution sought a brand that reflected its evolving vision: to become an open, welcoming host for both the global art community and anyone curious enough to enter its doors. The new identity balances structure with expressive freedom, built around a flexible monogram that merges K and B into a single form inspired by the building’s blend of tradition and constant reinvention. This graphic mark anchors a system designed to adapt — stretching, compressing, rotating, and interacting with artworks rather than imposing on them. Motion principles, a redesigned website, a humanist headline typeface developed in collaboration with a Swiss foundry, and a dual-mode color palette all work together to create an experience that is both accessible and avant-garde. With room for artists to reinterpret elements across touchpoints, the identity becomes a collaborative, living system — an institutional brand designed with an anti-institutional spirit.
