One in ten people are thought to have dyslexia, that’s at least 780 million people worldwide. Dyslexia is a common neurodiversity that affects our ability to read, write, and learn. It challenges millions of people around the globe, regardless of culture, age, language, and society. What if the answer could lie in typography? What if we could change the way we read, by changing the text font and design it to adjust specifically to our needs? Working in collaboration with educational therapist, Dr. Bonnie Shaver-Troup, Google Fonts and a team of typographic designers, Superunion created an open-access, variable typographic system, Lexend, a font designed to change the way the world reads. Over a decade ago, Dr. Bonnie Shaver-Troup observed that reading performance can be improved by altering the font, the scale and character of typography. Specific changes reduce cognitive noise and improve the legibility and recognition of words, leading 90% of children using Lexend to have better reading scores. This is how Lexend was born. A font, created to reduce visual stress, improve reading performance, and designed to help millions of people to read with fluency, especially those with dyslexia. The Lexend Project is a unique creative collaboration of Dr. Bonnie Shaver-Troup, Founder of Lexend, Google Fonts, and type designers Thomas Jockin, Linnea Lundquist, Santiago Orozco, David Berlow, Héctor Gómez, Rosalie Wagner, and Jeromy Lohmann, Head of Brand at CosmosDirekt, and Superunion. Lexend combines the newest technology in font software and a professional type design to pull together the most important typographic factors in reading proficiency into a variable font. This is designed to fluctuate based on a reader’s Words Correct per Minute Score – a typographic system that evolves with the reader to make the words more readable, based on who’s reading them. Lexend first launched with a regular weight, but now has expanded to offer multiple weights in a variable font, usable across a wider range of formats. The range of thickness in the design of the font and the hyper expansion allows readers to customise their reading experience to suit their needs. By creating an open-access, variable typographic system through Google Fonts that can be easily accessed globally and on any digital device, The Lexend Project partnership is helping to make reading accessible and easy for everyone. Since Lexend was launched on the Google Fonts platform, it has been viewed over 2 billion times and has been downloaded more than 500,000 times – changing the way the world reads and improving opportunities for hundreds of millions of people worldwide.
