Malmö Democracity
The city of Malmö tackled declining interest in democracy with a clever, culturally rooted campaign that put voting “on everybody’s lips.” For the upcoming election, officials tapped into Sweden’s unofficial national dish—the falafel—as a way to connect with residents on a personal, everyday level. By using food as the medium, the initiative reached the heart through the stomach, turning falafel into both a symbol and a conversation starter about civic participation. This playful yet strategic approach reframed democracy as something tangible, relatable, and woven into Malmö’s local identity, encouraging citizens to head to the polls with appetite and enthusiasm.
