The COVID lockdown that started in March 2020 created an unprecedented crisis for small businesses in New York City. Many once-bustling establishments completely shut their doors or had to drastically alter their business models. Locals wanted to help, and an online conversation emerged calling for local businesses to make merchandise buyable if they had any to sell. However, the businesses that needed the most help often had a limited online presence or no merch at all. A cross-discipline team created a nonprofit platform to enlist artists to create exclusive merch for local establishments, with all profits going to the business owners. In a matter of weeks, the team developed an e-commerce site, a brand identity, and a social and partnership strategy. The project eventually expanded from New York to Austin, Texas, and included collections raising funds for nonprofit organizations as well as for small businesses. With collections often selling out within hours, the initiative was featured by the likes of Vogue and NBC. Following the death of George Floyd, Merch Aid collaborated with leading Black designers to create merch for Black-led nonprofits, raising $60,000+ in 24 hours and cementing Merch Aid as a game-changing model to support communities in need. In total, Merch Aid donated over $100,000 to small businesses and nonprofit organizations.
