Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen – Wayfinding for Wanderers by Agency Silo transforms the world’s first publicly accessible art depot into an engaging visitor experience that balances behind-the-scenes access with discovery. Housing over 151,000 objects, the building’s design makes visitors feel as if they’ve stepped into the staff area of a major museum. The concept emphasizes the “back-of-house” experience: some spaces are fully accessible, while others can only be peeked into. Digital dashboards in the entrance display visitor info, live feeds from conservation studios, and highlights of new acquisitions. In the atrium, visitors encounter artworks through large windows and floating glass display cases, with touchscreens and QR codes providing deeper context. Wayfinding is seamlessly integrated with the industrial architecture—coding and room identification derive from building plans, signage uses metal mesh and chromed labels, and the system reinforces the depot’s utilitarian aesthetic while guiding exploration.
