In The Unexpected Hero, a strong and emotionally charged brand film, Prostate Cancer UK calls on families, friends, and communities to support men in understanding their risk and championing early detection. Directed by Nicole Pott at VCCP’s in-house studio Girl&Bear, the narrative follows 11-year-old Nikki in a gripping chase to protect her father from an invisible threat—prostate cancer—powerfully symbolizing the crucial role loved ones play in combating the disease. With a stirring voiceover by David Tennant and an evocative soundtrack by alt‑J, the film builds an urgent emotional appeal: it’s about time that together, we stood up to the UK's most commonly diagnosed cancer. The campaign underscores critical statistics—1 in 8 men will be diagnosed, Black men face double the risk, and despite prostate cancer’s high curability when detected early, thousands still die each year without a national screening program. Spanning TV, radio, and out-of-home media, the campaign targets 45–60‑year‑old men while also reaching their wider networks to drive awareness, advocacy, and systemic change.
