East Side Gallery
A new exhibition at the world-famous East Side Gallery has been developed for the Berlin Wall Foundation, based on a concept by the agency minigram. This outdoor exhibition explores how 118 artists appropriated the Berlin Wall through their work, offering fresh insights for both Berliners and tourists. It highlights the site's history, the significance of the exhibited art, and the role of this historical monument in the capital. The exhibition consists of 15 information steles made of plate glass and three bright red “Wall Angles” crafted from brushed aluminum, featuring images and bilingual text in German and English. Positioned in the park section near the Spree River, the steles match the Berlin Wall’s height, while the reflective glass integrates them into their surroundings. The stylized "Wall Angles," inspired by elements of the Berlin Wall, reinforce its identity while serving as focal points. At three main entrances to the East Side Gallery, the “Wall Angles” narrate key moments in the site's history. At Stralauer Platz, visitors learn about the initial border closure in August 1961. The Spree window focuses on the border strip's expansion, while the gatehouse tells the stories of escape attempts across the river. The 15 “Wall Steles” provide a deeper understanding of the site's complex history. Five thematic sections cover the Berlin Wall’s past, the evolution of the East Side Gallery, and the city's rapid transformation since 1990. The upheaval of 1989/90 and the subsequent societal changes are explored through accounts from eyewitnesses and artists, with interviews available at three steles. Lastly, the exhibition honors those who lost their lives at this section of the border.
