New Website for The Lalka Theatre
The Lalka Theatre is an exceptional place that links traditionally animated stop motion puppets with contemporary staging ideas. The goal was to create a site that provides information in a light-hearted way and reflects the character of the Lalka Theatre. Huncwot has recreated over ten of the most popular puppet animations from the theater’s history, in hopes it will invite users to explore the site. Highlights: The site design explores both the long history of the theater and puppetry itself. To recreate the puppets, Huncwot used the paper sketches and noted them by performance, production year and original names. Also, Adam Kilian, the founder of the Lalka Theatre was fond of Yves Klein Blue, so that ended up being part of the overall color theme. The main font of the site has also been custom designed by Robert Czakje in a technique called xylographing. Challenges: Making the puppets move, and making the sounds that imitate regular theatrical dolls. At first, Huncwot started by aiming for a complete library that would allow us to interact with our puppets. However, they were not able to find any programs that helped us create the kinetic body movements, joint constraints and transparent textures for the puppets. Therefore, the front-end developer Grzegorz Matyszewski decided to write his own prototype. Favorite details: Huncwot is most proud of those puppets. They were able to create digital puppets that mirrored their original counterparts and also entertained them the same way as they did in the theater. Technical features: After working through the inner “skeleton” of one of the puppets, they were able to build a structure for the next ones. Every puppet has a params array that describes its measurements as well as its body parts. Every body part has a specified point of rotation, weight, elasticity and path to the texture bitmap.
