A global campaign titled 'Lifetime of Greatness' has launched with the ambitious goal of having the Great Barrier Reef recognized as the first non-human recipient of the United Nations Environment Programme’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Developed by independent creative studio Supermassive in partnership with Tourism Tropical North Queensland, the campaign seeks to reframe public perceptions of the Reef—not just as a tourist destination or natural wonder, but as a living entity deserving of global recognition and protection. The campaign debuted on World Earth Day and is backed by a wide coalition that includes scientists, Traditional Owners, local councils, tourism operators, and environmental advocates. Major supporters such as Tourism Australia, Qantas, and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation have joined the initiative, alongside individuals like four-time World Para Surfing champion Sam Bloom, who also inspired the film ‘Penguin Bloom’. Central to the campaign’s messaging is the idea that visiting the Reef and supporting its tourism industry is one of the most impactful ways people can contribute to its preservation. By encouraging people to experience the Reef firsthand, the campaign highlights the role of tourism in funding conservation and raising awareness. Through this fresh narrative, 'Lifetime of Greatness' invites the world to celebrate and protect one of Earth’s most extraordinary ecosystems.
