16th Century Life Expectancy
UK Black Pride, known for its annual Pride Festival, aimed to expand its reach year-round by raising awareness of the UK’s Black LGBTQIA+ community, particularly Black trans individuals, through factual and empathetic storytelling. Their core objective was to debunk harmful misinformation, such as the misappropriated statistic that Black trans women have a life expectancy of 35 years. To achieve this, they launched the ‘16th Century Life Expectancy’ campaign, which featured modern Black trans influencers in 16th-century-style portraits to dramatize the absurdity of the misinformation. The portraits debuted at Christie’s, accompanied by panel discussions and an online hub, and were promoted through nationwide OOH, digital media, and social media. The campaign successfully diversified UK Black Pride's reach, engaging over 25,000 attendees and 500,000 social media followers, and significantly lobbied for political change, with MPs like Nadia Whittome supporting reduced wait times for gender-affirming healthcare.
