Penderecki's Garden
Virtual garden of Krzysztof Penderecki, passionate gardener and one of the greatest composers of the 20th century. This project commemorates the life and oeuvre of Krzysztof Penderecki, one of the most important composers of the 20th century and passionate gardener of his extensive park. This project pays tribute to both of his passions while finding a common ground between music and nature. We worked on the project with Polish cultural organization Adam Mickiewicz Institute, which was responsible for substantive concept and content. Design core: Not long after Penderecki’s death in 2020, we were asked by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute to create a virtual 3-D garden of the composer, but we weren’t ready and had no idea how to even start it. Penderecki’s music is very serious, rooted in analog sound and experiment—and very different from how we usually approach 3-D aesthetics. We knew we did not want to create a 3-D-rendered world with artificial trees and textures, so it took us a while to find the proper technology and visually adapt it to a hybrid of analog and digital worlds. Then we added some classical typography, dim colors and disturbing movements, and suddenly it clicked and started to work beautifully with the music.
