The Melbourne Renewable Energy Project (MREP)
The Melbourne Renewable Energy Project (MREP) was switched on 1 January 2019. The project is the first time in Australia that a group of local governments, cultural institutions, universities, and corporations have pooled their electricity purchasing power to enable a new renewable energy generation facility to be built. The new 80 mega-watt wind farm in regional Victoria is now supplying energy to town halls, bank branches, universities and street lights across Melbourne. The 39-turbine wind farm is owned and operated by Melbourne-based clean energy company Pacific Hydro and underpinned by a long-term power purchase agreement formed with the 14 members of the buying group. The wind farm will generate more than the purchasing group's needs, so it brings additional renewable energy into the Australian market. The MREP approach enables cities, corporations and institutions to take an active role in securing renewable electricity supply and taking action on climate change. It provides long-term price certainty, enabling customers to mitigate the risk of increased energy costs in a volatile market.
