Hanging By A Thread
CNESST’s “Hanging By a Thread” campaign uses handcrafted crochet animation to illustrate the fragility of psychological health in the workplace. Set in an office populated by crocheted characters, the film follows an employee with a loose thread on the back of his head who is bullied, excluded, and ignored. As he moves through the office, the loose thread catches on a door and slowly unravels him until only his outline remains; when he enters an elevator and the doors close, the thread snaps entirely. The striking metaphor underscores how mental well-being can deteriorate quietly and quickly without support. Brought to life through an intensive craft process—13 weeks of production, seven puppets, seven hand-built sets, 2,400 metres of wool, 340 hours of animation, and 3,575 frames—the spot delivers a powerful message: “Psychological health can hang by a thread.”
