Homeless home sale
Challenge Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet has always been a watchdog. Its fight against injustice and unfairness continued when the Danish government passed a law to prevent the homeless from sleeping in groups on the street, thereby depriving them their main protection against violent assaults. Solution According to Danish law, you’re allowed to sleep in groups on the street if you’re queuing up for a sale in front of a store. In order to display this ridiculous discrimination and use it as a conversation starter, we opened an online store for homeless people, providing them with a constant opportunity to sleep alongside each other. The Ekstra Bladet online store was only accessible on selected locations in Copenhagen where the homeless would usually find shelter. We made an integrated campaign around the store, using print ads, posters and social media to draw attention to the injustice of this law. We even put a journalist on the street to live the life of a homeless person in the weeks leading up to launch. Results Our campaign reached the news across the world and became a hot topic among politicians and various opinion leaders who joined the debate on live television and social media, while the numbers spoke for themselves: 8,5M Media impressions. 8,700 “Visits” in the online store. 270% Increase in positive mentions on social media.
