Dear World Leaders is an initiative by the UN Development Programme to raise awareness of the global climate crisis ahead of COP26 in Glasgow - and beyond. “Haven't slept in weeks, but for this campaign it's worth it . Climate crisis is already happening and we need action FAST.” - Mehmet Erdogan Communications Specialist for UNDP's Climate Promise English (Google translate) COP26 in Glasgow took off in the autumn of 2021. But for many, the meeting between delegates becomes distant and vague, and in particular the most vulnerable - those the summit should be about - feel voiceless in the elitist discussion of goals, as fewer and fewer actually believe in being delivered on. Therefore, the UNDP set out to try to democratize the conversation, and invite everyone. The solution is a video-driven website that lets users upload contributions in which they articulate their own, specific situation. How climate change affects their location and their immediate environment. Originally, the contributions were to be sorted solely by geography, but in the development of the concept it was clear that geographical boundaries divide us, but experiences and emotions unite us. Therefore, the primary taxonomy was based on basic human emotions, and users coupled emotions on the videos upon upload, so that the unifying element became how we each feel about climate change, and not just where we are privileged enough to live. Design and interaction in the solution signal “sense of urgency and seriousness, and form a clear contrast to the form of inquiry in the project title: Dear World Leaders. Thousands of videos were shared, and it succeeded completely organically in attracting contributions from several public figures (in Denmark, for example, from Nicolai Koster-Waldau). 72% of each video was viewed on average, and users spent up to 8 minutes per site visit on average. But the most important metric is the number of countries from which the project received grants. As many as 56 different countries participated, emphasizing that the project was anything but Euro-centric indulgences, but actually gave a voice to those who need it most.
