In late 2023 Patagonia relaunched its Black Hole duffels, the travel bags it has made for decades, with the biggest material change in their history. The weather- and abrasion-resistant TPU laminate that gives the bags their toughness, and makes up nearly half the fabric's weight, switched from virgin plastic to 100% recycled TPU bought as manufacturing waste straight from the factories, an industry first that cut the coating's carbon emissions per kilogram by around 90% and swapped the line's familiar gloss for a matte finish. The body fabric, lining and webbing were already fully recycled, and the new bags were tested in the lab, on climbing trips and by being thrown from a bush plane onto an Alaskan glacier before release. The 40, 55, 70 and 100 litre duffels were also redesigned for repair: Patagonia's Reno repair centre now stocks replacement bases, side panels and top panels so a damaged bag can be fixed with a new panel, which may not match the original colour, instead of a patch. Made in a Fair Trade Certified factory in Vietnam, the duffels went on sale on 29 November 2023, months ahead of the planned spring 2024 launch, to meet demand.
