Our Urgent Gift to the Planet is the open letter Patagonia published on November 28, 2018 announcing that the company would give away the $10 million it saved from the 2017 US corporate tax cut. Then-CEO Rose Marcario wrote that instead of reinvesting the windfall in the business, Patagonia would put it back into the planet, funding grassroots groups protecting air, land and water and working on solutions to the climate crisis, with a share going to regenerative organic agriculture. The gift came on top of the company's long-running 1% for the Planet giving and landed days after the US National Climate Assessment. The letter also made a case about taxes themselves: that a responsible company pays its fair share because taxes fund public services, first responders, democratic institutions and public lands. Published on LinkedIn and Patagonia's own channels, it drew wide coverage and was later reported in the company's benefit corporation report as $10 million given on top of its usual 1%.
