In Jim Longden’s debut short, Sonny Hall stars as a young man facing his demons alone in the wake of his mother’s death. Cast against a parallel London, where solitude and connectedness share a strange co-existence, director Jim Longden has guided his filmmaking through the lens of his own environment, and that of those closest to him – at a time when he faced many awakenings about the real world as a young man growing up. Occupying a unique space, caught somewhere between fiction and reality, his debut narrative short To Erase A Cloud follows a day in the life of young man Johnny Little – played by Sonny Hall –, his inner demons surfacing while living alone after his mother’s death. A non-actor whose own mother had passed away in his early years, his father’s whereabouts unknown, the film sees poet Hall embody a character close to his own reality, pursuing new understanding of his personal history through cinematic means. Taking a poetic sojourn through Little’s sense of isolation and descent into self-destruction, To Erase A Cloud meditates on the hope identified among darkness, and the mounting pressures of the next generation. Writing the first draft of the script at just 18, after leaving school at 16, for Longden, the film’s production signified a personal milestone – bringing with it industry murmurs he found at-once torturous and humbling. Bearing the mark of a young filmmaker on the rise, and a sense of authenticity true to its cast, an illusory world is molded around life’s continual evolution and the vulnerable moments from which clarity is found.
