Marketing isn’t about reaching everyone—it’s about reaching the right ones. When marketing-automation platform MailChimp asked us to help introduce it to the creative class of small business-owners its services could help, we knew we needed an idea unexpected enough to make the media-savvy target audience notice. The massive, mysterious, multipart campaign touched every corner of culture and got people searching for more by the millions. We created nine different projects that rhyme with “MailChimp.” MailChimp believes doing things your way isn’t just more fun; it’s the best way to grow a business. So we took an approach that celebrated the individuality and creativity at the core of its business—and its market. Inspired by the now-famous mispronunciation of “MailChimp” in the credits of hit podcast Serial, we developed nine different mini campaigns using the brand’s own model of sharply targeted marketing to reach potential customers. We didn't do commercials, we did films. A singing sandwich. A piñata penitentiary. A dog made out of kale. Our three surreal, short art films were teased with stylish posters and played before features in movie theaters nationwide. We made waves in the music world. A collab between Blood Orange’s Dev Hynes and Solange-favorite Bryndon Cook quickly racked up over 1.3 million streams and got glowing reviews from Rolling Stone and Pitchfork, to name a couple. Our whale-sound synthesizer caught the attention of noisemaker Brian Eno. And we took on fashion and beauty. SnailPrimp brought snail facials to Los Angeles. Nail artists battled to be the NailChamp online. MaleCrimp, the new hair trend we debuted during New York Fashion Week, found its way into French Vogue and The New Yorker. Almost every marketing rule went out the window. We hid the logo and obscured the name. We didn’t trumpet the work to advertising mags. Instead, we helped engineer the conversation with individual PR pushes for each element of the campaign, dropping them into places where people would find them. Naturally, people started talking. A lot. Because we worked with some of the smartest and most influential partners in the industry, we could watch the experiences ripple out into the real world as people discovered them and shared them online.
