The Punishing Signal
Indiscriminate honking is the bane of Mumbai City. The cacophony on the roads, especially at traffic signals, is simply unbearable. “The Punishing Signal” is an attempt by Mumbai’s police to curb this menace. Docile, laid-back traffic lights were turned overnight into Punishing Signals. This was done by linking them to specially created, direction-sensitive decibel meters. Whenever the decibel level crossed a dangerous 85dB, the signal counter would reset, thus keeping the signal red, longer. In short, it punished the impatient, horn-happy motorists by making them wait at the signal longer! The long-suffering citizens of Mumbai loved the idea. The honkers are having to mend their ways.
