Food For Thought
To counter fear and misinformation about refugees in Bulgaria—where over half the population has never met a refugee—UNHCR launched Food for Thought, a national campaign using food as a bridge to empathy. Centered around the idea that you can't judge a person you haven't met—or a dish you haven't tasted—the campaign invited refugees to share not just stories, but recipes tied to memories of home. It began with a digital cooking show hosted by British-Syrian chef Imad Alarnab, followed by a pop-up restaurant experience that brought together politicians, diplomats, and citizens for story-rich meals. Due to overwhelming demand, the campaign expanded with food trucks, sold-out dinners, partnerships with local restaurants, and spice kits shared by influencers—all designed to move refugee narratives from headlines to dinner tables. The result: 97% national reach, 55M+ impressions, and €1M+ in earned media, sparking a nationwide shift from fear to connection.
