Challenging the Brief to Bring a Truly Paperless Solution to Doping Control Testing
The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) is an international organization in charge of coordinating the fight against doping in sport. To do so, WADA regulates the doping control process for all sports organizations around the world and centralizes the information relevant to the fight against doping in ADAMS (its Anti-Doping Administration & Management System). It’s most notably responsible for centralizing the information recorded on the doping control form, the DCF, as well as results from these controls. To modernize its processes and be more relevant, WADA wanted to transform the paper DCF into a tablet application. WADA came to Nurun with a simple request: make the DCF paperless. However, the findings of Nurun’s research and discovery activities led to this scope being challenged and expanded. While the doping control process was initially thought of as straightforward and standardized, the reality was something completely different. Doping control officers (DCOs) have to adapt to a multitude of scenarios and follow the processes defined by their anti-doping organizations (ADOs), not WADA. While the data recorded on the forms was standardized, the process of gathering it greatly varied. The project’s goal was simple: bring value to the users (DCOs), but more importantly, ensure the solution would be adopted by the ADOs responsible for leading doping control efforts around the world.
