BMW X Sky Arts
When director Francis Wallis was commissioned to direct four short films for BMW and Sky Arts, he knew he wanted to combine technology and art in a striking and vividly new way: so he asked Studio Private to collaborate on a series of bright, immersive, AI-generated artworks against which he could shoot the BMW i7 in a virtual production studio. Studio Private started by using programs that allow artists to create 3D animations using iterative machine-learning image synthesis. Then, the team fine-tuned the timing and framing of their animations in compositing to align them with the studio’s 11k resolution workflow. After a final grade with Francis, these were ready to be played in psychedelic detail on the LED walls of Mars Volume’s virtual production studio. There on the stage, surrounding the car, the glittering blue caves transformed into ethereal pink clouds in a space that blends the real and the virtual and looks like nowhere on Earth. “We had to step out of our comfort zone many times on this project,” says Francis, “and often the mantra was just reminding ourselves to ‘trust the process.’”
