Billionaire Blast Off
Billionaire Blast Off was a four-month Firefox campaign that turned the browser's "Open What You Want" platform into satire Gen Z could play with. The premise was simple: Firefox is the only major browser not owned or backed by a billionaire, and billionaires trade people's data to fund their rocket trips, so the campaign helped them leave on a one-way trip to space. It launched on 1 October 2025 with a microsite that served as mission control. There, a Build-a-Billionaire generator, starting from art by paid human illustrators and scaled with a generative AI pipeline, produced grotesque fictional billionaires with names and backstories, plus shareable space selfies. Mondo Robot designed Data War, a 74-card physical game that mixes War with Exploding Kittens-style chaos, in five weeks. It debuted at TwitchCon San Diego with 22,000 expansion packs in attendee bags and was followed by a free browser version. At the Firefox booth, visitors played the game and animated their billionaires in AR Holobox displays. At the TwitchCon block party on 18 October, a real mini-rocket built by Sent Into Space carried the community's creations into near space, livestreamed to the crowd and on the microsite. The campaign produced more than 3,600 AI billionaires, over 30,000 physical and digital game players and more than 30 press and creator features. It was a Shorty Awards finalist, and Data War received an Honor.
