Studio AKA and creative agency Leith have once again teamed up with the Scottish Government for the second instalment of Be the Early Bird, a campaign promoting early cancer detection in Scotland. Building on the success of the 2023 film, this new chapter reintroduces the original cast of animated birds and adds a spirited new character—a seagull who discovers a lump in her neck but promptly seeks medical help and returns to her chip-stealing antics. Directed by Kristian Andrews, the short film blends nature documentary style with vox-pop interviews, using charming character animation to address serious health issues in a light-hearted, accessible way. Studio AKA’s 3D team employed innovative techniques, such as simplified lip sync and displacement maps for feather simulation, to meet the tight production schedule. The result is a technically clever and emotionally resonant piece that gently encourages viewers to act on potential cancer symptoms without delay.
