Earth’s Burnout
Timed around Earth Day and ahead of new regulations mandating corporate responsibility for associates’ mental health, the Global Compact Country Network Brazil, a United Nations initiative, has launched "Earth’s Burnout" to highlight the devastating impacts of climate change and advocate for sustainable business practices. Drawing on a 2024 study by ecologist William Ripple, which revealed that 25 of the planet’s vital signs have reached record levels of deterioration, the campaign imagines Earth as a human patient, suffering from symptoms associated with burnout: stress, insomnia, arrhythmia, weakened immunity, hair loss, high blood pressure, reflux, and fibromyalgia. Through creative illustrations resembling medical exams, the initiative underscores that the planet is ill and urgently needs recovery. The effort culminates in a symbolic "medical leave" request for the Earth, framing the environmental crisis in relatable, human terms. Developed with the expertise of Nobel Peace Prize laureate and climatologist Carlos Nobre and Professor Paulo Saldiva of the University of São Paulo Medical School, the campaign delivers a stark and compelling message. It aims to engage the business community by encouraging companies to join the Global Compact Country Network Brazil, formally committing to corporate sustainability and advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
