Ask for Angela
Victim Services Toronto has partnered with 72andSunny Toronto to scale its “Ask for Angela” initiative into a citywide safety network across Toronto. The expanded program combines discreet out-of-home advertising, PSA films, retail and hospitality partnerships, and a digital support infrastructure to make help more accessible for people experiencing gender-based violence or exploitation. Building on the UK-originated code phrase system (“Is Angela here?”), the campaign embeds support into everyday spaces like grocery stores, pharmacies, hotels, healthcare facilities, and transit hubs, with trained frontline staff able to respond and connect individuals to services. The OOH work disguises messaging within familiar product-style ads to maintain discretion, while the PSA films focus on internal emotional experiences to build empathy and awareness. Backed by government funding and a growing partner network across thousands of locations, the initiative aims to evolve from a pilot program into a permanent, citywide safety system that pairs awareness with immediate pathways to assistance.
