360° VR Space Safari with Helen Sharman
Join the experienced team of astronauts on a virtual space mission. Together you will go on an awe-inspiring experience as you travel through space and see their home like never before, in all its fragile beauty. Over the past ten years, Ørsted has gone from a fossil fuel company to become the world’s most sustainable energy company. They have reduced their carbon emissions by 83% – faster than required by science to limit global warming to 1.5 °C. By 2025 they will be virtually emissions-free. It has not been easy to change, but it was necessary. They want to share their optimism that it is possible to make even the biggest of changes, in only a decade. Space Safari project: We can’t send all of Earth’s citizens into space, but with 360° VR Space Safari we can get you as close as possible. Ørsted has teamed up with American and European astronauts to send you on a virtual space mission. They believe that if more people could see the world as astronauts do, it would create a greater sense of responsibility for our shared home and speed up green action. So far Ørsted has sent more than 6 Million people virtually into space with their VR experience. In 2019, Ørsted was named the most sustainable energy company by having reduced their carbon emissions by 83% in just one decade. Ørsted's CEO was invited to speak at New York Climate Week in 2019 and wanted to take the opportunity to inspire and encourage other leaders, companies and individuals to demand faster action on climate change and emphasize the importance of renewable energy sources. Solution Ørsted partnered with four astronauts and the VR / AR production company Khora to create a VR experience that sends people on a space mission to see Earth, as the astronauts do. With a 360º VR Space Safari, Ørsted and Khora were able to create a campaign that got people as close as possible to the experience that the astronauts call "The overview effect", which is the psychological shift that happens when you suddenly see your planet from outside the room. The VR experience was created with 360 video and 3D animation and is an immersive experience you can experience in VR headsets, but also on youtube and Facebook. Result Space Safari was used to open the event 'The Climate Decade' at NY Climate Week, where 200 participants were sent on this virtual space journey simultaneously in VR. As the experience is also available on YouTube, where it can be experienced without a VR headset, the experience has had great exposure and so far, Ørsted has sent more than 6.4 million people into space with this VR experience. The campaign won two awards at the Danish Design Award in 2020 in the categories 'Message Understood' and 'People's Choice' Quote from Ørsted: "We created Space Safari because we as an energy company want to increase awareness of the current climate crisis we are in, and by seeing the earth from the outside, we learned from astronaut and author Frank White, from the phrase" The Overview Effect "that when you see the planet from the outside, you get a sense of responsibility to take care of the earth we live on. And we believe that it is important to democratize that feeling. We do not have the opportunity to send thousands of people into space, but we can create an experience that comes close to this feeling with VR technology ”- Niels Rahr, Global Lead Creative Strategist, Corporate Branding & Marketing, Ørsted https://khora.com/project/space-safari/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lGbfT_L_9hYPeople spotlight
